The RPM Promoters Workshops marked 105 gatherings for promoters, and its 28th consecutive meeting in Reno, Nevada, with its just concluded Western National Workshop at the Eldorado Hotel Casino. The short-track promoters’ event attracted over 100 tracks, associations, and series, 35 exhibiting companies representing 21 states and three Canadian provinces. The three-day, 26-session Workshop opened with keynote remarks from Chris Blair, discussing the effects of changing fan demographics on events. Twenty-four presenters, panelists, and speakers discussed topics ranging for business management and food and beverage, to social media, and sponsorship.
First day sessions included Blair’s remarks, remarks by 36th Auto Racing Promoter of the Year Bob Sargent, a comprehensive discussion of food and beverage by Todd Stucky of Eldora (OH) Speedway, attorney Ron Bennett’s overview of zoning tax, and regulatory considerations for promoters, and “Class Warfare,” asking, “how many classes is too many classes?”
Twelve Friday sessions included the always-popular Workshops “Risk Management Q&A” panel discussion, a 40-year Workshops retrospective by Jody and Tom Deery, and sessions discussing the challenges of employing part-time workers, tech tools, training officials, negotiating food and beverage contracts, establishing non-racing events at short tracks, and minor league ball sports promotions.
The Workshop concluded with four Saturday sessions including, “Outsmarting the Smartphone,” discussing race track social media policies, and sessions discussing weather strategies, and advertising in a new media world.
The Workshops now move on to Speedweek 2013 convening at the Plaza Resort & Spa, Daytona Beach, FL, February 18-20, 2013. Racing Promotion Monthly, the idea newsletter for auto racing promoters, is published year-round with the support of K&K Insurance Group, Inc., Hoosier Racing Tire.

When promoters convene in Reno November 29, history will be made as short track promoters mark the fortieth year of national gatherings for promoters. The event will be the 105th produced by Racing Promotion Monthly, the idea newsletter for auto racing promoters. More than 35,000 promoters, vendors, and industry leaders have attended the Workshops begun in 1972.
The Western Workshop, convened since 1984 at the Eldorado Hotel Casino in Reno, NV, offers twenty-six sessions covering topics ranging from risk management to social media, from food, and beverage service to tech tools, and more with a special emphasis on assisting promotional newcomers. Speedway executive Chris Blair will present keynote remarks. He’ll share the spotlight with Todd Stucky, Eldora (OH) Speedway concession manager. Jody and Tom Deery who will offer a 40-year Workshops retrospective, and attorneys Cary Agajanian and Ron Bennett will anchor liability and racing business law discussions. Other sessions will include: “Class Count Crisis,” asking how many classes are too many for a nightly card; “The Challenge of Part-Time,” finding and training one-night-per-week employees; and a newly added session, “What The Other Guys Are Doing,” a look at gate, sponsor promotions from minor league baseball, hockey, and basketball.
