Photographs (Clockwise from Top); Bill McAnally finally had the opportunity to speak at the 49th Annual RPM@RENO Workshops after the Workshops were cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Speed Sport's Ralph Sheheen, a native to the West Coast and the new president of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame and Joe Tripp address those in attendance.
The 49th annual RPM@RENO Western Workshops held at the Eldorado Resort Casino, part of "The ROW" in Reno, Nevada, were definitely a success, a definition of the industry and establishment.

Ralph Sheheen and Joe Tripp from Speed Sport motivated and educated the room, while Bill McAnally brought his experience and expertise to the forefront while showing the value in business to business marketing and the strength of relationships, something McAnally has excelled in. Tom Deery amnd Steve Beitler spurred dynamic conversations covering a multitude of topics, while Gregg McKarns continued his great tradition of discussing his year, along with mixing in a plethora of information and ideas.

The Workshops not only saw an increase in attendance but also in the amount of entities represented. While the speaker lineup was impressive and the content diverse as well as beneficial to promotional businesses there was a unique build in blend as individuals built and fostered relationships.

All great news as the Workshops steer Southeast for Daytona and the 49th Annual RPM@Daytona Workshops at the Plaza Resort & Spa, which will see several new presentations including Chris Dolack, Kendra Jacobs and the featured presentation of John Formica an "Ex Disney Guy", who brings a unique dynamic to the loaded two-days of the Workshops.

The Workshops are something my family takes great pride in and we have attended as many as we have been able to since the beginning and I left with 18 pages of notes, that tells a story of how valuable the Workshops are each and every time..."
"You get by with a little help from your friends..." (photo above - left-to-right; Larry Boos, friend of RPM, promoter at Montpelier Motor Speedway, Winchester Speedway, the Rumble at Fort Wayne and more, along with former ARPY Larry Kemp and Tom Deery) in Indianapolis at the PRI Trade Show in the "TOPS" Workroom & Lounge. 2021 was a great start, including RPM roundtables which provided an introduction into the benefits of RPM and the Workshops for potential new attendees. The "BS and Brews" Happy Hour was a tremendous success seeing the room nearly full and creating a great platform for introductions, conversation in addition to the cross pollination of racing genres. We will once again be joining PRI for the 2022 version and looking forward to the improvements that can be made. The Performance Racing Industry takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana, December 8-10, 2022.
Economaki interviews Al Unser after his victory in the Indianapolis 500 in 1970 for ABC Sports.
Chapter 26 in the book "Let Em' All Go! The Story of Auto Racing by the Man that was there - Chris Economaki" is titled; "Promotion: Where did it go?", beginning on page 270 we continue an in-depth look into the chapter.

We continue to page 276 of Chapter 26 where Economaki continues to discuss a fundamental problem that faces auto-racing to this day. While we have a very compelling product, what do we sell?

In the early years of the sport, the death-defying nature of the sport was heavily hyped. "See the drivers cheating death in their high-speed battles!" Economaki wrote. "But in the late 1950's and early 1960's when companies began to get involved in the sport, they immediately said, 'Well gee, we can't get involved if you are talking about death and injury, that's completely off limits'. So the sport suddenly had to play down the element of danger.

So they shifted their promotion to speed. 'Come to the track to see a new track record! Faster than man has ever traversed this racing course...' But technology soon became an issue, and aerodynamics and the cars became so fast that the accidents could be catastrophic.'

The balance of this remains to this day, however, the sport, which once encouraged innovation and design has retracted in many aspects to store bought, cookie cutter racecars that have been created by decades of rules writing that have given participants for all intense purposes, the same car to race throughout many divisions. Of course, safety advance were absolutely necessary.

Economaki states the following, "That's our dilemma. It's poor form today to promote danger, and we can't promote speed records because nobody sets them any more.

So now, what do we have to sell?

There are still some promoters out there. No doubt the best is Humpy Wheeler in Charlotte, who is a genius from a promotional standpoint.

A lot of people don't know this, but Humpy started out selling National Speed Sport News as a young kid at tracks in the Carolinas."

This evolution of the sport is something to study. Of course Wheeler's pre-race shows were magical and epic during his promotional years at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which added to what we all try to do today.

It has become a game of thinking outside the box and strong promoters have this ability.

Economaki further speaks about Wheeler, "Humpy has the rare ability to think like a promoter. It was the same motivation that drover P.T. Barnum in another time.

There were some promoters from another era - Sam Nunis comes to mind - but most weren't in the same league as Humpy. Humpy might well be the greatest in the history of the sport.

I think Humpy - and others who are natural promoters - lie awake at night thinking of ways to attract attention and sell tickets. It's something that is in their mind 24 hours a day."

Humpy would have been a success in any era, because his ideas - while they seem outrageous - are actually very basic. He's essentially asking the question: How can I make my events more exciting, more interesting, more dramatic, to attract more attention?

That's the element that's never changed, not from 1906 or 1936 or 1966 or 2006."

No matter how you feel about Humpy Wheeler, Economaki's points are strong. Every one of us has racing to sell. The racing is almost always a great product, it is the creativity, driver and promotion to get people to turn out and buy tickets that sets each of us apart.

Interestingly, RPM has several "natural" promoters engaged and a part of the organization and several promoters who are working tirelessly to develop their craft. All lie awake thinking about the business of attracting more people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Once again, Economaki's Chapter 26 memoirs driver home what RPM has been designed for.

Wheeler's pre-race shows at Charlotte Motor Speedway are something of legend in the industry. Car jumps, military presentations and the memorable Brian Carson, who was a high risk taking stunt driver.

Online Ticket Sales For Sports Events Still 70% Below Pre-Pandemic Levels – $6.55B In 2021

Revenue from online sales of tickets to sporting events in 2021 are still well below pre-pandemic levels but is projected for a huge rebound in 2022. According to data presented by Safe Betting Sites, US, revenue from online sales of tickets for sporting events is still around 70% lower than pre-pandemic figures of 2019; just $6.55B in 2021. The segment is projected to rebound by over 300% in 2022.
2021 Revenue Still 70% Lower Than Pre-Pandemic Revenues

The sports world was rocked by 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic when sporting events in most of their forms were essentially halted. Some sporting organizations and leagues such as the European football leagues and the NBA in North America were able to re-start some of their sports albeit in “new normal” conditions. The most visible and most glaring of these special conditions is the lack of fans in attendance in most events.

After over a year since the global outbreak of the pandemic, digital ticket sales for sporting events have yet to recover in 2021. Revenue from digital ticket sales from sporting events is projected to amount to just $6.55B in 2021 – 69.48% lower than 2019’s revenue of $21.45B. Notably, however, revenue from 2021 can be taken as an early sign of recovery as it is 25.2% higher than 2020’s online ticket sales revenue.
Over 300% Rebound Projected For 2022

Projections for 2022 are much more optimistic, with the segment set for a huge rebound. Revenue from digital sales of tickets to sporting events is projected to reach $28.22B in 2022 – a whopping 331.17% YoY increase. 2022’s projected revenue is even a 31.6% increase from 2019’s pre-pandemic revenue.
The US Generates Most Revenue From Online Ticket Sales – Almost Half Of Total

The US generates the most revenue from digital ticket sales of sporting events and in 2019 accounted for 47% of the world’s total revenue. In 2021, the US accounts for a similar share of the world total revenue, but will also experience a 70% decrease from pre-pandemic revenue at just $2.95B.

Rex Pascual, sports editor at Safe Betting Sites USA, commented:

“There are plenty of growth opportunities left in the online sale segment of sporting event tickets, as evidenced by its standing as having the lowest penetration rate in the event tickets industry. The segment must overcome the major obstacle of rising ticket prices which some experts predict will lead to its transition into a subscription economy business model, which has major implications for season ticket holders who currently generate the highest share of total revenue from sporting event tickets.”

Online and mobile ticketing are important segments for revenue for all of us. Event Sprout is a participating supporting sponsor of the RPM Workshops and has several great programs and option as well as the MyRacePass porgram as their platforms continue to evolve.

"IMCA.TV" Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway
defines the importance of the "Live Stream"

As racers head toward warmer climates or even indoors, over 400 racers have already registered for the "IMCA.TV Winter Nationals" at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Arizona.

In a recent IMCA publicized press release, Cocopah promoter Brad Whitfield was admittedly speechless.

More than 400 drivers in six IMCA divisions are already pre-entered for seven nights of January racing at Somerton, coming from 21 states and two Canadian provinces. IMCA.TV Winter Nationals is presented by Yuma Insurance and broadcast by IMCA.TV.

“It completely blows my mind that we will start the 2022 season with an IMCA crown jewel event with pre-entry numbers like these,” said Whitfield, who spent much of his summer traveling to tracks in the Midwest and talking to drivers one-on-one. “We had 108 cars for our Winter Nationals in 2020 and 275 for the inaugural IMCA.TV Winter Nationals in 2021. For 2022, we already have 420 pre-entries.”

“I’m humbled, I’m blessed and I’m speechless” he continued. “I will do everything in my power to make sure that every driver who pulls into the pits and every fan that comes through the front gate has a good time.”

IMCA Modifieds run for $1,000 to win, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods both for $750 to win and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $500 to win in their feature events Wednesday, Jan. 5; Thursday, Jan. 6; Friday, Jan. 7; and Saturday, Jan. 8; and again on Thursday, Jan. 13; Friday, Jan. 14; and Saturday, Jan. 15.

With added money from M-Ray Engineering of California, Mach-1 Sport Compacts run for $300 to win each night Jan. 5-8. IMCA STARS Mod Lites join Jan, 13,14 and 15 shows, racing for $350 to win each of those nights. Yoshimura bonuses of $250, $150 and $100, respectively, will be awarded to top three finishers on Jan. 15.

Modified pre-entries were at 126, with 111 Northern SportMods, 75 Stock Cars, 41 Hobby Stocks, 40 Sport Compacts and 23 STARS Mod Lites.

In addition to home state drivers, IMCA.TV Winter Nationals competitors hail from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, along with the provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace will join the IMCA Modified regulars at Cocopah. Mike Wallace will wheel an IMCA Stock Car and John Schneider, aka Bo Duke, a Northern SportMod.

“This will be an affordable grassroots event for every driver,” promised Whitfield. “They’ll get to park in the same place, they’ll get to race seven nights, and they’ll get to enjoy the warm Arizona weather.”

In addition to the highlights of being a true "grassroots" event, the live stream is most certainly assisting the event become sensational. IMCA.tv's tagline, "Where America comes to Watch Racing" also helps guides competitors throughout the country, giving participants exposure to events and speedways that they may not known about previously. It also gives viewers their "brand" of racing to watch, while some of their local heroes participate in a major event during the Winter months when they may not be able to attend or travel to the event in person.

Viewing for the event has several options. One night is $24.99, while "Week 1" is $79.99, with the entire 9 night event being available for $119.99. All far less then travel and lodging to the event, bringing a long trip directly to your selected device and once again making our world a smaller place.

Uniquely, this event is almost certain to be well attended by fans as well streamed nationwide. Overall, this is a winning situation for the sport and we applaud the efforts made by Whitfield and IMCA to bring an event of this magnitude to the forefront for grassroots racers as the calendar changes.

We also applaud this effort by Whitfield for his fans, "Free camping will be available".
RPM ENDORSEMENT; Kami Arnold and Scott Russell who promote Placerville Speedway, the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and the "Hangtown 100" offered the following; "10-out-of-10. This is our 5th Conference and each we learn something new and informative. We also build new relationships and cultivate old ones. We are thankful for RPM giving us the opportunity to grow, improve and develop as Promoters."

MYLAPS Sports Timing - (Balton Aulls, Market Specialist, for MYLAPS Sports Timing while visiting RPM@Reno shaking hands with a customer.)

Founded by two Dutch friends, they pioneered and founded AMB, i.t., an automatic timing and scoring system in 1982 in Harleem, the Netherlands. using radio controlled racing cars. The system was designed to replace the use of stop watches and create a more advanced and accurate form of timing and scoring. ROCKET RACEWAY PARK, NEW NAME FOR 82 SPEEDWAY IN TEXAS

New ownership has taken over the Rocket Raceway Park. The Petty, Texas, dirt oval formerly known as 82 Speedway will see new branding and an exciting mix of events for the 2022 season.

The management team of Kevin Sustaire and Kevin Rogers will take the reins at the Rocket Raceway Park. After spending the last three seasons at the RPM Speedway - Texas, the duo intends to capitalize on their prior experiences.

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue promoting weekly racing in Texas,” Sustaire said. “We feel like we have gained a lot of experience over the past few years and are excited for the new venture.”

“The opportunity to challenge ourselves and provide quality weekly racing events was another enticing characteristic of the Rocket Raceway Park,” Rogers added. “I am excited to get to work.”

For the 2022 season, the Rocket Raceway Park will see five competitive divisions of weekly racing action.

Promoters in the region have planned to work with each other. The USRA Modified division will join the card on a bi-weekly basis. They will compete for the Rocket Challenge in 2022 and alternate weekends with the Superbowl Speedway in Greenville, Texas.

"The guys at Big O Speedway and XR have the same division (referencing another division). This seems like a positive direction for an affordable class of race car for folks to get into. I am excited to see how this class grows throughout the season,” Rogers said, as this indicates the positive move of promoters working together.

In addition to the changes to the Rocket Raceway Park, the KR Promotions LLC Cup will once again join the Kevin and Kevin Show at the Petty, Texas, speedplant.

“I am excited to bring the KR Cup to Lamar County. Weekly racing will be contested for the opportunity to win the KR Cup Championship,” Rogers noted.

Race On Texas will be joining the track’s network as well.

“It is going to be a challenging and exciting season for us, the drivers, crews, partners and fans for the Rocket Raceway Park,” Rogers revealed. “Sustaire and I have been burning the candle at both ends this short offseason finalizing the details and are ready to get started.”

A new website is being finalized at RocketRacewayPark.com and should be available soon. Also, make sure to follow Rocket Raceway Park on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/RocketRacewayPark), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/rocketracewaypark/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/rocketintexas) for updated information.
Photo Above: The lineup board at the Tulsa Shootout in the Tulsa Expo Center is purely an advertisement for why MyRacePass and their race management systems have become so critical in managing major events.

After seeing this and speaking with MyRacePass ownership partner Josh Holt, he indicated that it was still of importance as the company still battled cell phone carrier service challenges with the confines of the enormous building, but for the most part, things were operating smoothly with a capable staff behind the MyRacePass brand.

Interesting Fact; An interesting fact, that reflects not only this board, but the strength of early season racing events in January - just between the Chili Bowl Nationals (370 to date); Tulsa Shootout (1700) and the IMCA Winter Nationals (400) there are 2470 entries of different racers in just a few weeks of racing. Those are staggering numbers.
NASCAR Cup Series star, Kyle Busch took to the dirt in the Tulsa Expo Center as part of the Tulsa Shootout in addition to 1,700 competitors, even winning a qualifying race advancing from his 8th place starting position to first. Busch's exploits are positive exposure for all avenues of the sport.

“The Sponsorship Collective";
Looking into Brand Sponsorship --- Why a Brand Sponsorship?

Many tracks are their own brand, the same with sanctioning bodies and many involve brand sponsorships, so we will examine definition of the brand sponsorship which may help some achieve goals they are seeking.
A Definition of Brand Sponsorship

In sponsorship, several types exist that cater to the differing needs of individuals, organizations, or companies.

For example, there’s promotional sponsorship, which is less financially based. For those businesses or organizations that do require funding from a sponsor, this is a different type of sponsorship. There’s also in-kind sponsorship, where instead of receiving cash, you’d get services or goods.

Another type is branded sponsorship.

Brand sponsorship is when a brand acts as a sponsor. The brand would choose the cause to support, be it an event, a small business, or a charity. Since its definition is so broad, brand sponsorship can run the gamut, including the examples I mentioned in the intro such as concerts, sports games and/or business events, etc.

Now, to understand brand sponsorship, you need to know what a brand is.

Brands aren’t always companies or multi-million-dollar corporations. There’s also personal branding, which is promotional on an individual level. For instance, if you were asked who Bill Nye or Elon Musk were, you could answer, right? Those are examples of personal brands.

Another type of brand is a product brand. Nike, Apple, and Tesla are all product brands since they sell products. The same is also true of Target, McDonald’s, Starbucks, IKEA, and Coca-Cola.

Brand sponsors sometimes pursue causes and companies they’re interested in supporting, but much more often, these mega-names receive an influx of sponsorship requests from individuals, organizations, or nonprofits.

You might wonder, what would make a huge company such as a branded sponsor want to pursue sponsorship in the first place?

Here are the goals of branded sponsorship.
Easy Marketing

Large corporations can’t stop marketing just because their audience reached a certain point. Yet the larger your audience, the more marketing that’s required. You must segment your audience into niche-specific buckets, use personalized content and email marketing, maintain an active presence on social media…it’s a lot!

Branded sponsorship checks off many marketing goals without the company having to do as much work. The brand can grow their reach, increase their bottom line, and differentiate themselves from their competitors - all through sponsorship.

You can see now why sponsorship is so enticing and why some corporations are willing to spend millions of dollars to get their name attached to a big sports game or other popular events.
Better Brand Awareness

At the stage your business or organization is in now, you’re always trying to build brand awareness. That could be why you pursued branded sponsorship in the first place. You figured that the star power of a big-name brand will be enough to get your name out there too.

Here’s something you might not know, but you’re not the only one trying to build brand awareness. Even though it might seem like every single person on earth has heard of Apple or Nike, that’s not true. In some far reaches of the world, there are people who have yet to become privy to these brands.

Big companies can always afford to increase brand awareness further, as this often leads to…
More Sales

In 2019, the Coca-Cola Company earned $37.26 billion dollars, says Market.US. In 2020, Tesla raked in $721 million according to a New York Times article published in January 2021. Although that’s an amount of money that many people can only ever dream of achieving, for big brands, there’s no such thing as too much money.

When brand awareness goes up, that usually brings with it an increase in leads. Through your activation opportunities and assets, more of the sponsor’s leads will convert into buying customers, which drives up their bottom line.

These tips are helpful when you are seeking to partner with a brand that will help your bottomline.

It was formally announced that Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis would transition to a new name for the 2022 season and beyond: Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The name change marks a return to the full Indianapolis Raceway Park moniker, used from 1961 to 2005. The track has been named Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis since 2011, and was O’Reilly Raceway Park from 2006 to 2010.

“We are excited to bring back the IRP name with the continued support of our long-time partner Lucas Oil,” said Kasey Coler, Vice President of Track Operations and Management for the NHRA. “We just wrapped up our 60^th Anniversary of the facility and the timing couldn’t be better to celebrate a bit of our history with the new moniker.”

Incorporating Lucas Oil into the Indianapolis Raceway Park title continues a partnership with the two parties that began in 2011. The new name will see continued affiliation with Lucas Oil Products and their support of the property as well as the NHRA at large.

“Everyone at Lucas Oil is excited for the new name change,” said Brandon Bernstein, Director of Partnership Marketing for Lucas Oil. “It brings back the old school oval logo and feeling of the IRP name, with added Lucas Oil of course. We are pleased to be associated with NHRA and the track for many years to come.”

Already on the slate for 2022, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park is poised to feature another diverse and exciting schedule of events from the spring to the fall.

Notables already announced include five oval race dates – including the Carb Night Classic, Thursday Night Thunder Homecoming, NASCAR’s return in July, and a tripleheader of open-wheel action in October – as well as the prestigious Dodge//SRT NHRA U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend.

Indianapolis Raceway Park has played a very pivotal role in short track racing and our industry, not only hosting ground breaking events, but also being a home to promoters to strengthen their business. Former ARPY, Bob Sargent quickly comes to mind as he has leased the facility on multiple occasions to promote a variety of different racing events.
World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series Champion, Brad Sweet was an interested attendee at the 49th annual RPM@Reno Western Workshops, being interviewed here by Dan McGee, who covers the sport throughout the West Coast and attends the Workshops loyally.
SWEET VISITS RPM...

2021 saw 35-year old Brad Sweet win his 3rd consecutive World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series championship. Near the close of the season Sweet of Grass Valley, California, added some duties to his plate, partnering with NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson to take over the promotional reigns at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.

Sweet and Larson have plans for the facility.

"We felt like we needed to do this to save the facility," offered Sweet, who was in attendance at the 49th annual RPM@Reno Western Workshops at the Eldorado. "It's going to be a lot of work for us, but we have some great people to help us. We are looking forward to this and Dennis (Gage) has been very helpful in giving us the tools to be successful during the transition."

"I have always loved Silver Dollar," Sweet continued. "Some of my fondest childhood memories are the Gold Cup (Race of Champions). I've learned a lot about the racing business in the last eight years on the Outlaw Tour and I have promoted some races along the way."

Sweet was obviously a welcome guest to RPM and an attentive listener benefitting from the sessions and visiting with vendors throughout.
Ricky Brooks is always working when it comes to Late Model racing.

** SRL HEADS EAST WITH SUPER LATE MODEL RACING EVENTS

For 2022, the SRL will expand its operation east to sanction some of the nation’s top Super Late Model events. Ricky Brooks, Larry Collins and Brian Olsen will head up the SRL’s new venture.

Since 2001, the SRL Southwest Tour Series has been sanctioning and managing short track events in the southwest region. From its modest beginnings, the SRL has grown to be the premier sanctioning body in short track racing on the west coast, with three series competing at the region’s top short tracks, with national television coverage of all of its events.

“With encouragement from key players in our industry, we’ve decided to bring the SRL east,” stated Managing Partner, Larry Collins. “Brian (Olsen), Ricky Brooks and I are ready to develop our style as a sanctioning body in other markets.”

A professional, no non-sense approach has worked for the SRL as they have built their reputation in the industry over the years.

“We’re not going to re-invent our approach. We’re going to continue to manage our events in a professional manner, with solid tech and race procedures that are fair to all the competitors.” stated Brooks. “It’s important to us to have good communication with the teams and create an atmosphere on race weekends that the teams and our staff enjoy being part of.”

Since 2008, the SRL has sanctioned events in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. The SRL has built series and sanctioned events for Super Late Models, Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Spec Late Models and Legends Cars. The SRL has also promoted its own events such as the $30,000 to win Winter Showdown at Kern County Raceway.

“When I first started working the SRL events on the west coast, I was surprised by how professional the races were run and how well the teams and the offcials worked together,” added Brooks. “We look forward to bringing that style east.”

The $10,000 to Win “Money in the Bank” (June 8, 2022) and the $30,000 to Win “Battle at Berlin” (August 10, 2022) at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI will be sanctioned by the SRL in 2022. Additional events will be announced at a later date as the SRL is currently in discussions with the promoters and racetracks who host some of the marquee Super Late Model events in the east and mid-west.
NASHVILLE FAIRGROUNDS SPEEDWAY COULD RETURN TO NASCAR NATIONAL SERIES SCENE

It has taken four years to get to this point, and it likely will take until 2024 or later for a Cup race at a facility where NASCAR Cup drivers last raced in 1984.

The announcement Tuesday appeared designed to boost public support for the Speedway Motorsports plan, in which the idea is not to use dollars from the general fund but instead have 30-year revenue bonds finance the renovation, paid off by rent payments, user fees/taxes on tickets, sponsorship agreements and event revenue.

"This was a big next step in the process," said Bristol general manager Jerry Caldwell, the Speedway Motorsports point man on the Nashville project.

"We’ve spent a lot of time with the Cooper administration working on a deal that would be good for everyone."

It is energizing to see a project like this at a celebrated short track like Nashville moving forward. It is great news for the industry.
Tidbits;

You may very well be asking yourself, why there is a photograph of John Madden in this edition of the Newsletter. After watching the "All Madden" documentary on FOX prior to Madden's passing, we caught a unique comment on Madden's fascinating personality association with his fans.

"John (Madden) had the ability to smell the roses...." was the quote. There were many photos and scenes of Madden visiting with fans, stopping in unexpected places including a quote from Madden himself about a dairy farmer, "that farmer never has a a day off, he needs to milk those cows every day..."

While it seems simple, it's something not many of us have the ability to do and perhaps we should. There is nothing wrong with stopping, taking stock and looking around and smelling the roses. We all work hard to accomplish the amazing things we are able to do. It can be done without fanfare and just because, but it is believed it also helps focus and the ability to create and meet goals. It was something that just needed to be shared.

Release and Waiver Reminders

This is something we are going to focus on in repeat and based on the advisement of Paul Tetreault from Agajanian, McFall, Weiss, Tetreault, & Crist, LLP - we will have an entire breakout session that reviews the proper procedure and use of the "Release and Waiver" at the 49th Annual RPM@Daytona Workshops.

Last November we were given an article in regard to a situation and lawsuit that highlighted an unfortunate system that turned into a lawsuit where a go-kart concessionaire was involved.

The story of the case is that the family of Middle School student sued a go-kart raceway for the alleged wrongful death of their son, arguing that an injury he sustained at the venue became cancerous and ultimately led to his death.

The lawsuit was filed in manner stating the company's negligence resulted in their son's go-kart colliding into a wall, causing severe trauma to the groin area. The injury was stated to have developed into a large mass, that was eventually diagnosed as a rare cancer that can develop following a severe physical injury, according to the lawsuit.

There was a policy in place on the company's website stating that children under 12 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability form prior to driving a go-kart.

According to the lawsuit, the parents did not sign any waivers that would adversely affect their ability to file the suit. There are several other items that go with the suit, however, the waiver was the part of the suit that raised our attention level.

Every year, we go over the importance of the release and waiver and the new challenges or cases that develop each year as the release and waiver is challenged.

Undeniably, motorsports is a riskier venture than most sports, not just for the drivers, but for all involved, including those who may be permitted to be in the restricted areas during any part of any race.

Given the extent of those risks, the liability waiver is a critical components of a motorsports risk management program.

In a 1999 article, David A. Holcombe, the risk manager at International Speedway Corp. / NASCAR stated, "Our sport lives or dies by that waiver release".

In many cases, this is true and even more so is the retention of the records. Filing and organizing the release and waiver is important. With scanners and the easy of filing a PDF, along with the original in a bankers box is incredibly important.

There is also another lesson that we have learned reading the extent of the suit in Athens and that is the potential maturity level of employees and making sure they are capable of dotting "i's" and crossing "t's". Many times we place trust in and put pressure on individuals who may not be as detail oriented as we need them to be for the job that we have assigned them to perform.

These are things and situations that we just need to keep our eyes on. The folks that are taking care of and handling your release and waiver perform a critical operation for your business. Their business is no joke and this function is something that needs to be taken seriously as to not place yourself into a position that results in a negative reflection on your business.

In addition to the knowledge we gained in regard to this we did talk to one insurance provider who related that it is becoming incredibly difficult for concessionaire (rental) type go-kart facilities to find insurance. We are sure it exists at a premium, however, if you are considering renting karts, please beware. The losses have been related as extremely high so the insurance companies and underwriters have taken note. Actual go-kart racing insurance at designated karting facilities where competitors bring their own karts to compete is readily available.
REFERENCE POINTS, DOCUMENT WAREHOUSE / DATABASE AND INFORMATION "CATCH ALL"

  • These links and notes will be here as long as this remains a relevant topic providing folks with an easy location for reference -

There was a press to create the proper “toolbox” of documents to give tracks the opportunity to return to racing safely. Several individuals and organizations worked diligently to create the right “playbook” and all were successful in creating programs that could lead a track in the proper direction to follow all set requirements and provide the opportunity to reopen.

We have included links and documents to provide our readers access to as many as we could find, however, this is a constantly evolving process so new information and updated “better” documents could be edited and issued in lieu of what we have to offer, however we will do our best to keep you up to speed with the most relevant information we can. We intend to keep these documents available for as long as they will be required throughout the duration of the pandemic.
